A CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) is a Canadian designation for professionals who specialise in advanced life insurance strategies. They go beyond basic policies to use insurance for business protection, wealth transfer, tax efficiency, and estate planning.
A CLU focuses on how life insurance fits into complex financial situations, especially for business owners or those with significant assets. It signals deep proficiency in insurance as a tool for risk management and tax planning, not just coverage.
CLUs structure policies for specific insurance needs:
Identifying risks like business interruption or estate taxes
Creating solutions such as buy-sell agreements funded by insurance
They understand Canadian tax rules and legal integration for life insurance
Tax-free death benefits to reduce CRA impact on heirs
Coordination with wills, trusts, and corporate structures
CLUs often hold other designations but add a focus on insurance on top to further distinguish their specialist ability.
A CLU will benefit you when you need insurance tied to business succession, estate costs, or executive benefits and not routine personal coverage.
CLUs help you during key applicable life scenarios:
Funding a business buyout if a partner dies
Covering estate taxes to preserve family assets
Setting up tax-efficient wealth transfers
You Might Be Thinking; “How can insurance minimise taxes on my estate?”. A CLU will often collaborate with accountants or lawyers to find the best solution specific to your needs.
A CLU will understand how to build insurance into your broader financial plan.
They give you targeted protection for wealth and business risks. They will give you clarity on tax-efficient strategies, confidence in complex “what-ifs,” and control over how your legacy is preserved.
They do this through:
Business succession planning
Estate tax coverage
Corporate-owned insurance for benefits
